The Marine Economy: A key component of the EU Integrated Strategy for the Atlantic Area

The Atlantic Area Conference "The Marine Economy’ – a key component of the EU Integrated Strategy for the Atlantic Area”, hosted by the Border, Midland and Western Regional Assembly on 7th February 2012, will provide a unique opportunity to inform the various stakeholder groups on the European Union Strategy for the Atlantic (EUSA) which was officially launched in Lisbon (Portugal) on 28th November 2011.
Keynote speakers will include: Mr. Simon Coveney, T.D., Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine; Mr. Matthew King, Head of Unit, Maritime Policy for the Atlantic Space, DG MARE, European Commission. Other speakers will include representatives from the Atlantic Area Programme Managing Authority, the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR), the Marine Institute and a selection of Atlantic Area approved marine projects.
Presentations will outline the aims and objectives of the Atlantic Strategy as a mechanism to support growth and job creation through the sustainable development of our shared Atlantic marine resources.

Open Education Week will take place from 5-10 March 2012 online

and in locally hosted events around the world. The objective is to raise awareness of the open education movement and open educational resources. There are several ways you and your organization can be involved:

Provide a pre-recorded informational virtual tour of your project, work, or organization. This should be focused on the work you’re doing in open education, designed for a general audience. These can be done in any language.
Offer a webinar. Webinars are well suited for topics of general interest, such as what’s happening in open education in a particular area or country, or topics that offer discussion possibilities. Webinars can be scheduled in any language, 24 hours a day. We would also like to feature question and answer sessions in a variety of languages and time zones.
Pre-record a presentation on open education concepts. Do you have an inspiring presentation about open education? Can you discuss the issues that open education seeks to address in your country, region or globally? We plan to feature short, introductory overviews of open education and OER for different audiences, such as those new to the idea, policy makers, faculty, etc. Presentations in any language are welcome.
Create or share text-based, downloadable information. This should be information on the open education movement, in any language, appropriate to introduce the movement and its important concepts to a variety of audiences. Specific information on your project can be linked to from the openeducationweek.org website.
Sponsor or host a local event during the week of 5-10 March.This could be a community discussions, a forum on open education, a challenge and/or a celebration. We invite you to get creative with planning events. Children in War and Armed Conflicts

Armed conflicts around the world continue to expose many millions of children to inexcusable forms of violence, including abduction, rape, mutilation, forced displacement and sexual exploitation. In some contexts, children often taken on active roles in conflict, forced to participate either to carry weapons as combatants or to assume auxiliary roles. The breakdown of social protection that occurs during every armed conflict leaves all children vulnerable. Many children are threatened with separation from their families, orphaning, disability and serious, long-term psychosocial consequences; girls are especially at risk of unwanted pregnancy.
This short certificate course examines the effect of armed conflict on children in the 21st century. It looks at the various ways in which children are involved in conflicts and the substantial impact that they can have on children's mental and physical well-being. The course highlights concrete actions that can be taken to contribute to the full implementation of children"s rights in conflict and post-conflict contexts, including through the application of humanitarian law; and the increasing ways in which perpetrators can be held to account.
This e-learning course involves approximately 40 hours of reading, interaction with students and the instructors on discussion boards, quizzes and webinars with invited guests. The course is based on a participatory, active learning approach, with an emphasis on critical reflection and peer-to-peer learning. The maximum number of course participants is 25. Students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Participation. It is also possible to be an auditor of the course.

Covering a series of important topics of current research interest and with many practical applications, the conference is concerned with all aspects of risk analysis and hazard mitigation, associated with both natural and anthropogenic hazards.

The analysis and management of risk and the mitigation of hazards is of fundamental importance to planners and researchers around the world. We live in an increasingly complex society with the potential for disasters on a worldwide scale. Scientific knowledge is essential to our better understanding of risk. Natural hazards such as floods, earthquakes, landslides, fires and others have always affected human societies. Man-made hazards, however, played a comparatively small role until the industrial revolution when the risk of catastrophic events started to increase due to the rapid growth of new technologies. The interaction of natural and anthropogenic risks adds to the complexity of the problem.

Advances in computational methods and the ability to model systems more precisely now enables hazards to be quantified, their effects to be simulated and risk analysis to be pursued with greater accuracy, providing more effective risk management. These developments are important for all areas of human endeavour and have particular relevance to environmental issues where the risks involved are substantial. Effective risk management and the mitigation of possible hazards have become a high priority of government and a public concern

O Colóquio Internacional de Formação Inicial e Continuada de Professores de Línguas Estrangeiras: “Desafios da aprendizagem e do ensino” (Cifle) será realizado nos dias 16 e 17 de março no Rio de Janeiro.

O evento será realizado pelas faculdades de Educação e de Letras da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), em parceria com o Consulado Geral da França e a Universidade de Lyon. O objetivo é estimular o diálogo intercultural sobre as questões ligadas à formação inicial e continuada dos professores de línguas estrangeiras, estabelecendo intercâmbios entre estudantes, professores e pesquisadores.

Outro objetivo do colóquio é promover a comunicação entre o estudo de línguas e o de literaturas estrangeiras. O evento não é direcionado apenas aos estudantes, professores e pesquisadores de francês, mas também aos de outras línguas estrangeiras.

A programação será organizada em torno de cinco eixos temáticos: “Análise do discurso e práticas docentes”, “Processos de ensino e aprendizagem”, “Leitura e letramento”, “Literatura, cultura e formação docente”, “Políticas Públicas de Ensino”.

A coordenação e organização do colóquio são realizadas pelo Laboratório de Ensino e Pesquisa e Extensão em Formação de Professores de Línguas, que visa o desenvolvimento de estudos sobre a formação de professores de línguas e literaturas, com o objetivo de melhor compreender esse campo de atuação profissional, apontando possíveis perspectivas de trabalho num diálogo com os saberes da prática docente.

The near future is full of promess for our association. Euprera Spring Symposium will take place in Berlin, February 17th & 18th on "Web 2.0 in governmental and NGO communication in Europe". Early registration is open until January 19th.

The Euprera annual congress will be held in Istanbul on September 20th-22nd on "Researching the Changing Profession of Public Relations". I remind you that the deadline for abstract submission is on February 3rd, 2012.
Several projects are expected to emerge and take shape in the future, including an ambitious publication policy to enhance our scientific legitimacy.

The PRACE Winter School is an intense, 5 day, graduate level course in high performance

computing.

The school will focus on hybrid programming for the best exploitation of massively parallel

architectures. The system available at CINECA supercomputing center for hands-on

training is called PLX and is the largest public GPU cluster in Europe. It is made of 274 compute nodes, each containing 2 NVIDIA® Tesla® M2070 and 2 Intel(R) Xeon(R) Westmere sixcore E5645 processors.

Gene, hybrid clusters

• Accelerators (NVIDIA GPU, Intel MIC)

• Advanced MPI

• Hybrid programming with OpenMP

• Some use cases will also be presented.

The number of participants is limited to 40 students.

Applicants will be selected according to

their experience and qualificatiions knowledge

of a high level programming language (C/C++

or FORTRAN) is required, as well as a working

experience in parallel programming with MPI.

Attendance is free of charge. Grants are

available for participants not funded by their institution

and not coming from the Bologna area.

Each student will be granted access to CINECA’s

supercomputing resources for a period of

two month after the class.

Fourth PRACE Executive Industrial Seminar “HPC driving innovation in Europe”
Bologna, Italy, 16-17 April 2012

This seminar is designed for strategic decision makers (CIOs, CTOs and R&D Directors)

responsible for the design, deployment and operation of computing and data management

infrastructures or using them to drive innovation in their enterprises.

The main objective of the seminar is to show how high performance computing

(HPC) and its continuous evolution can enhance European industrial competitiveness,

the innovation capabilities it brings to industry and how PRACE can facilitate effective

use and development of HPC in Europe. The programme will focus on successful

applications of HPC technologies across a wide spectrum of industries, the pilot usage

of PRACE resources in industrial projects and the trends in the evolution of HPC technology.

Speakers will include specialists from leading innovative European companies,

HPC experts from academia, as well as representatives of PRACE and the European

Commission.

A special emphasis will be placed on how PRACE can facilitate the acquisition of HPC

expertise by European industry. In particular, the seminar will endeavour to identify and

eliminate barriers to accessing PRACE’s expertise by SMEs.

The NANODEVICE project partners and the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health invite you to the "International Congress on Safety of Engineered Nanoparticles and Nanotechnologies" to be held on 28–31 October 2012 in Helsinki, Finland.
The goal of the SENN2012 Congress is to summarize and share the latest knowledge on the safety of engineered nanomaterials and nano-related technologies. The emphasis is on producing solutions to the safety challenges related to engineered nanomaterials and nanotechnologies. Another aim is to enable commercial opportunities for the safe use of these materials and technologies.
The Congress will provide a forum for reporting and demonstrating findings, methods, tools, and approaches to safety and health at workplaces using nanoparticles and nanotechnologies. Le Congrès/Salon national Préventica pour la maîtrise des risques professionnels se tiendra à Bordeaux, au mois de janvier 2012 et à Strasbourg au mois de mai. Os jovens portugueses, entre os 18 e os 30 anos, terão a oportunidade de participar em actividades com jovens europeus de 15 nacionalidades (Polónia, Montenegro, Portugal, Grécia, Bósnia Herzegovina, Turquia, Kosovo, Itália, Macedónia, Roménia, Israel, Lituânia, Moldávia, Albânia e Sérvia). Workshops, palestras e desenvolvimento de planos de negócios são algumas das actividades previstas.

As empresas familiares têm um peso decisivo na economia portuguesa.

Empresas mais recentes ou antigas, de pequena ou grande dimensão, sociedades anónimas, por quotas ou mesmo empresas cotadas em bolsa são frequentemente geridas pelos seus proprietários e dependentes de um processo de decisão no âmbito da família proprietária.

Apesar do interesse recente por esta temática, a maioria dos estudos sobre gestão empresarial têm dedicado uma atenção desproporcionada à empresa de capitais dispersos.

O PEF tira partido da contribuição de profissionais com vasta experiência na gestão e apoio técnico

The conference aims to provide a platform for an international, interdisciplinary dialogue on expectation formation in financial markets and the economic impact of expectations. We invite interdisciplinary contributions from the fields of economics, finance, cognitive sciences etc. Preference will be given to empirical papers applying survey data, experimental data, transaction data, market-based expectations data as well as any further data applied in novel approximations of expectations.

Grievings 2012, the next edition of the Annual International Conference of the Institute of English Cultures and Literatures of the University of Silesia in Katowice, will be held in Ustroń, Poland, 20-23 September 2012.
Although generally resented and deemed unfavourable for individuals, societies and nations, grief, grievance, and grieving, along with a complex list of epithets that could in various situations, under varying circumstances, accompany them – racial grief, political grievance, protracted grieving, chronic grief, traumatic, unresolved grievance – nevertheless occupy a notorious place in culture and its manifestations in literature, art, history, science, or politics.
Confused experiences of melancholia, grief, nostalgia, shame, anguish, hate, longing, and jealousy continue to permeate cultural productions across historical moments, literary epochs, and political sympathies.
It is these veneers that we intend to uncover and dismantle, thus – dissolve, or, assuming yet a different approach, assemble into larger entities exhibiting common patterns of formulaic imagining.
The name Grievings comes with several emphases in mind – we place great impact on attempts to explore questions of how globalization has affected modes of grieving, how it has altered the subjects/objects over which we grieve, and finally, how grievances have come to adopt the shape of ultimatums, sometimes escalating into forms of sabotage, schizophrenia, or even outright military conflict.

Chama-se “BTL Tech”, e é o novo espaço dedicado à tecnologia da BTL – Feira Internacional de Turismo.

Join us for a Seed Sampler Workshop being held in February. The session will held be at our SGS Brookings laboratory from 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 7th until noon on February 8th.

Our Seed Sampler course is the first step towards accreditation to sample for ISTA certificates. ISTA certificates require the sampler (person who pulls the sample) to be accredited. This workshop is an excellent educational experience for anyone sampling seed, regardless if it will be exported or not.

The following topics will be reviewed:

	ISTA and AOSA sampling rules

	sampling methods

	sealing seed lots

	subdividing samples

	review of ISTA certificates and their use

Cost is $300 US dollars per person. Workshop presentations and materials are provided in English. Exams are available in Spanish for a translation and correction fee of $100. Please make requests for exams in Spanish at time of registration

The emerging field of Hydropedology is being developed from the need to improve our quantitative understanding of mass and energy fluxes within terrestrial systems, also denoted as the ”Critical Zone“, and to recognize their feedbacks to soil-forming processes.
Scientific advances are being stimulated by the coupling of various disciplines that historically have been separated. Specifically, Soil Science, including pedology, soil physics and soil biogeochemistry, is linked to Hydrology across spatial scales, from the pore to catchment scale. Recent scientific developments in the fields of Geophysics and Remote Sensing have catalyzed integration of the scientific fields.
